Tricky Veggies for Kids

I heard an interesting piece on the radio yesterday about efforts to increase the nutritional value of foods served at school lunches. These include highlighting healthier foods with better lighting, rearranging the way different options are presented to the kids (for example, move the chocolate milk  a little farther away to make it more difficult to reach when going through the lunch line), and adding pureed veggies to foods that wouldn’t normally contain veggies (nacho sauce). The retail-style tricks to allure young consumers to pick certain foods over others with lighting and placement are brilliant. After reading about the Banana Guard on another blog, I knew this was something I had to try. Continue reading

Good Riddance, Meridia

Yet another diet drug has been pulled from the market. Read the story here.  In the quest for a quick fix for overweight and obesity, people have been putting their health at real risk. This quote pretty much sums it up: ” “In all its investigation of the drug, the FDA could find not one person whose benefit from the drug outweighed its risk,” said Dr. Gerald Dal Pan, director of the Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology at the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.”
